Why visit
The Hotaru-ika Museum lets you experience the bioluminescent firefly squid year-round (the live spring season is March to May when squids glow blue in tidal pools). The Buried Forest Museum displays the preserved 2,000-year-old cedar root mounds. The Mirage Information Center can predict rare spring mirage days. Day-trip to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, which begins nearby, a striking crossing of the Northern Alps through 20m snow walls in spring. Sample fresh squid sashimi, white shrimp, and toyama black ramen.
When to avoid
Uozu is small and most foreign visitors miss it entirely, don't expect English signage outside the museums. The firefly squid season is short (March to May) and the bioluminescent natural display is weather-dependent. Mirages are rare and unpredictable. Winter brings heavy Sea-of-Japan snow that can disrupt trains and the Tateyama Kurobe Route. Many local restaurants are cash-only. The Tateyama Kurobe Route requires advance reservations and runs only April through November.
