Visit Uyuni for the Salar de Uyuni and the high desert routes beyond it. The town itself is practical, but the landscape outside it is one of the great reasons to plan Bolivia. Use Uyuni as logistics: sleep, stage the tour, recover, and move onward.
When to avoid
Do not visit Uyuni expecting comfort to be the main story. Altitude, cold nights, rough roads, and tour quality matter. Choose operators carefully and build slack around transport. A rushed Uyuni trip can turn an extraordinary landscape into a logistics problem.
