Why visit
For Roman ruins integrated into a working medieval town, plus Jazz à Vienne (late June to early July), one of Europe's premier jazz festivals held in the 13,000-seat ancient theater. Best months are June and September, warm, festival-adjacent, but not midsummer crowded.
When to avoid
Summer can be very hot in the Rhône valley, 35°C heatwaves are increasingly common. Jazz festival nights drive up hotel prices and push availability, book months ahead. Many Rhône-valley restaurants close on Sundays and Mondays. In Vienne, treat hours and movement as part of the itinerary. Use Vienne with slack in the schedule, especially around small museums, churches, galleries, and transit.
