Why visit
For peaceful Ardennes river scenery, hiking, kayaking the meandering Semois, the artists' colony heritage at Membre, and the tobacco museum at the old drying barns. Best months are May, June, and September, when forests are lush and the river is at the right level for paddling.
When to avoid
There's almost no public transport, you really need a car. Most restaurants and small museums close midweek out of high season. The valley fills with day-trippers in July and August. Wild boar are increasingly common in surrounding forests, don't approach. In Vresse-sur-Semois, set the route only after checking opening days and distances.
