Why visit

The Kurhaus and Bowling Green ensemble, a vast Beaux-Arts spa palace with one of Europe's oldest casinos, is the heart of the Belle Époque town. Wander the Wilhelmstraße boulevard, soak in the 1913 Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme thermal baths, and ride the historic Nerobergbahn water-counterweight funicular up to the Greek Chapel for views over the Rhine valley. Day trips to Rheingau wine villages (Eltville, Rüdesheim) for Riesling tasting, or across the river to Mainz with its Romanesque cathedral and Gutenberg Museum. Try Frankfurter grüne Sosse and a glass of crisp Rheingau Riesling.

When to avoid

Sunday closings are strict, nearly all shops shut and the city is sleepy. Frankfurt's massive trade fairs (Messe) spill over and book out hotels in Wiesbaden, check the Frankfurt Messe calendar before booking. The casino has a strict dress code (jacket required for men). Wiesbaden is fairly quiet by German big-city standards, nightlife is limited. If you want techno clubs, Frankfurt is 30 minutes away by S-Bahn.

About Wiesbaden

Wiesbaden is the capital of the German state of Hesse, and the second-largest Hessian city after Frankfurt am Main. With around 283,000 inhabitants, it is Germany's 24th-largest city. Wiesbaden forms a conurbation with a population of around 500,000 with the neighbouring city of Mainz. This conurbation is in turn embedded in the Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region—Germany's second-largest metropolitan region after Rhine-Ruhr—which also includes the nearby cities of Frankfurt am Main, Darmstadt, Offenbach am Main, and Hanau, and has a combined population exceeding 5.8 million.
