Why visit
Wigan Pier itself is the literary pilgrimage, the canal-side warehouses inspired Orwell and are being redeveloped into a leisure quarter. The Wigan Athletic football club (Latics) and the Wigan Warriors rugby league team (one of the most successful clubs in the sport) are local religion. Haigh Hall and country park north of town offers Georgian-mansion grounds and woodland walks. Try the local specialty Wigan kebab, a meat-and-potato pie inside a buttered barm cake (bread roll), an absolute carb-on-carb classic, washed down with a pint of Lancashire bitter.
When to avoid
Wigan isn't really a tourist destination, most visitors come for the football, rugby, or as a stopover. The town center has seen significant decline. Outside match days the high street can feel quiet. Don't expect visually coherent, this is a working northern town. Saturday match days fill pubs and trains, budget extra time. The damp Lancashire weather is no joke. Pack waterproofs.
