Why visit
The Aboakyer Festival on the first Saturday in May is the obvious draw, two warrior groups (asafo) compete to capture a live bushbuck deer with bare hands and present it to the chief, with drumming, dancing, and processions. The wide sandy beaches stretch for kilometers and are far less developed than Cape Coast's. Birders should head to the Muni-Pomadze Ramsar wetland just west of town, home to seabirds and seasonal flamingos. Visit the colorful fishing harbor at dawn as boats return with the night's catch and women haggle over fish on the sand. Try kenkey with grilled tilapia and pepper sauce.
When to avoid
The strong Atlantic surf and rip currents make Winneba's beach unsafe for inexperienced swimmers, stay near the shore and check with locals. Malaria is endemic, take prophylaxis and use repellent. The harmattan winds (December to February) bring dusty, hazy conditions and reduced visibility. Power and water cuts are common. Carry a torch. ATMs in town are limited. Bring cash from Accra. Don't photograph people or fishing boats without asking permission.
