Why visit
Climb the Yellow Crane Tower (Huanghelou), a five-tiered pagoda on Snake Hill that has inspired Chinese poets for 1,800 years. The current rebuild dates from 1985 but the views over the Yangtze are unchanged. Stroll East Lake (Donghu), China's largest urban lake, with its wooded paths and the cherry blossom park (peak late March). Visit the Hubei Provincial Museum for the 2,400-year-old Marquis Yi of Zeng bronze bells, one of China's archaeological treasures. Wander Hankou's old European concession streets for tree-lined boulevards and Art Deco buildings. Try Wuhan's signature breakfast, hot dry noodles (reganmian) with sesame paste, from a sidewalk stall.
When to avoid
Wuhan summers are infamous as one of China's 'three furnaces', July to August heat with extreme humidity is brutal. Plan indoor mid-day activities. The Yangtze flood season (June to August) occasionally overwhelms riverside areas. Mainland China visa required for most nationalities. The 144-hour transit-visa-free policy doesn't currently apply to Wuhan airport. Air quality varies. Check AQI. Outside major hotels and youth, English is rare, install translation apps. WeChat/Alipay essential. Foreign cards rarely work.
