Why visit
The Xanten Archaeological Park (LVR-Archäologischer Park Xanten) is the largest open-air Roman museum in Germany, reconstructed amphitheater, temples, harbor, and the impressive RomerMuseum built on the original Roman bath foundations. The Xantener Dom (St. Victor's Cathedral, 13th to 16th century) holds rare medieval treasures and a beautifully preserved cloister. The town's medieval gates and walls survive remarkably intact. Cycle along the Niederrhein (Lower Rhine) flat river plains, ideal for relaxed family rides. Try Niederrhein specialties like Reibekuchen (potato pancakes) with apple sauce.
When to avoid
Xanten is small, a half-day for the Roman park and another half for the cathedral and old town is enough. Don't plan extended stays. Public transport from major cities is limited. Rail connections require changes. Sundays are very quiet. The Roman park is largely outdoors, cold or wet days are miserable. Check forecasts. The Lower Rhine is famously flat, don't expect dramatic landscape, just gentle pastoral countryside.
