Why visit
Gulangyu Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the obvious draw: a car-free island of pastel European-style mansions left from the 19th-century treaty port era, piano museums, banyan trees, and seafront promenades. Take the ferry across (book ahead). Explore Xiamen University's beach campus (one of China's prettiest), the Buddhist Nanputuo Temple at the foot of Wulao Peak, and the seafront ring road for cycling. Day trip to Tulou, the spectacular UNESCO Hakka earth roundhouse villages, about 3 hours inland. Try Xiamen seafood (oyster omelette, satay noodles), Hokkien cuisine, and rich Fujianese tea (kungfu cha tradition).
When to avoid
Typhoon season (July to September) regularly threatens, monitor forecasts and don't book outdoor itineraries during warning periods. Gulangyu gets unbearably crowded with domestic tourists on weekends and Chinese holidays, visit on a weekday morning. Mainland China visa needed. The 144-hour transit-visa-free policy applies via Xiamen Gaoqi airport for many nationalities. Tap water is undrinkable. WeChat/Alipay are essential, cash and foreign cards rarely work. Cross-strait political tensions with Taiwan affect the area. Military exercises occasionally close airspace.
