Why visit
The main draw is Shaoshan, Mao Zedong's birthplace village, about 40 km west of central Xiangtan. The preserved farmhouse where Mao was born in 1893. A vast bronze statue. The Mao memorial museum. And the family ancestral hall draw a steady stream of red-tourism pilgrims from across China. The Qi Baishi Memorial Hall in central Xiangtan honors the painter's ink-brush legacy. The campus of Xiangtan University is pleasant for a walk. Try Hunan-style spicy cuisine, mao shi hong shao rou (Chairman Mao's red-braised pork) was reportedly his favorite, plus stinky tofu, smoked pork with chilies, and rice noodles.
When to avoid
Xiangtan isn't a typical tourist destination, you'll be one of very few foreign visitors and English is essentially nonexistent outside one or two top hotels. Heavy industrial pollution can be problematic. Check AQI. Shaoshan crowds peak on Mao's birthday (December 26) and Chinese national holidays, visit on a weekday. Mainland China visa required. Cash and foreign cards rarely work, set up Alipay/WeChat Pay before arrival. Hunan food is really spicy, specify 'bu yao la' (no spicy) only if you really mean it.
