Why visit
Penglai Pavilion, a Tang dynasty cliff-top complex of pavilions and temples about 65 km from central Yantai, is the obvious draw, the mythical jumping-off point for the Eight Immortals' voyage to the Isles of the Blest, with views over the Bohai Strait. Visit the Changyu Wine Culture Museum (the original 1892 cellars) and tour vineyards in the Yantai wine region. The city's seaside parks and clean beaches (Yantaishan, Golden Beach) draw weekend crowds. Mount Kunyu and the Tianhou Temple round out the historical itinerary. Try Shandong-style seafood, especially abalone, sea cucumber, and Yantai grilled fish, paired with Changyu cabernet.
When to avoid
Yantai's beaches get packed with domestic tourists in July to August, visit weekdays or shoulder season. Mainland China visa needed for most nationalities. Coastal fog (especially spring) can ruin Penglai views, build flexibility into your itinerary. Air quality varies seasonally. Winter coal heating across Shandong drives up pollution. WeChat/Alipay essential. Don't drink tap water. English is limited outside major hotels. Install translation apps.
