Why visit
Currently extremely difficult to visit, see warnings below. Historically, the Church on the Blood (Khram-na-Krovi) was the obvious draw pilgrimage, built on the cellar where the Romanovs were shot. The Yeltsin Center is a striking modern museum honoring Russia's first post-Soviet president, born in the region. Soviet-era constructivist architecture along Ulitsa Lenina, the Vysotsky skyscraper viewpoint, and the European-Asian border monument 17 km west are notable. Day trip to Ganina Yama monastery in the forest where the Romanov bodies were initially dumped. Try Ural pelmeni (dumplings) and Siberian-style fish.
When to avoid
Travel to Russia is strongly advised against by virtually every Western government in 2026 due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and the risk of arbitrary detention of foreign nationals. International flights are extremely limited. Sanctions affect banking and credit cards. Yekaterinburg has a strong Soviet/military-industrial history and foreign visitors face heightened scrutiny. Winters are really brutal, frostbite-cold and short daylight. Air pollution from smelters can be severe. Wait for international circumstances to change.
