塑上江南 | The Jiangnan beyond the desert
Why visit
The Western Xia Imperial Tombs, nine massive earthen pyramids on the gravel plain at the foot of the Helan Mountains, are the obvious draw, an eerie landscape sometimes called 'China's pyramids.' The Helan Mountain rock carvings (8,000 prehistoric petroglyphs) are nearby. In the city, the Nanguan Mosque (a striking 1980s rebuild with green domes) is one of China's most photographed Hui Muslim sites. The Shapotou desert resort 200 km south offers camel rides, sandboarding, and the Yellow River sweeping through dunes. Yinchuan's wine country at the eastern foot of Helan Mountains has rapidly become China's premier wine region. Try Hui hand-pulled lamb noodles (suantang shouban) and roast lamb skewers.
When to avoid
Yinchuan sees few foreign tourists, English is essentially nonexistent outside the airport and one or two top hotels. Mainland China visa needed. The 144-hour transit-visa-free policy doesn't apply to Yinchuan. Sandstorms (March to May) can blanket the city with fine dust, wear a mask. Summer can hit 35°C+ and winter drops to −20°C. WeChat/Alipay essential. Foreign cards rarely work. Be respectful around mosques, dress modestly, ask before photographing worshippers. Government sensitivity around Hui ethnic affairs has risen in recent years.
