Why visit
Yiwu is essentially a wholesale tourism city, if you're not in the import-export business, the appeal is anthropological. Walking the Trade City for a day is really surreal: District 1 (toys, jewelry, hardware), District 2 (luggage, umbrellas), and so on through five vast multi-story buildings. The Yiwu Imam Asia Mosque serves the city's 30,000+ Muslim trader community. Exotic Street (Yiwu Trade Street) has Lebanese, Yemeni, Iraqi, and West African restaurants serving authentic food rare elsewhere in China. Try halal lamb skewers, Yemeni mandi rice, and the local Jinhua ham (the original aged ham of China) in nearby Jinhua city.
When to avoid
Yiwu is not a tourist destination, it's primarily for traders. Hotel prices spike during major trade fairs (April and October China Yiwu International Commodities Fair). The wholesale market enforces minimum order quantities (often 100+ units of any item), you cannot buy single souvenirs there. Mainland China visa needed. Some Arab and African nationalities have stricter visa requirements. The city is largely modern and lacks classical Chinese atmosphere. WeChat/Alipay essential. The summer humidity is oppressive.
