Why visit
Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist temple, a stepped pyramid of stone reliefs and stupas, is the obvious draw. Sunrise tours from town are memorable. Prambanan, the towering Hindu temple complex 17 km east, rivals Angkor in artistry. In the city, the Kraton (Sultan's Palace) and Taman Sari water castle preserve royal Javanese arts, and Malioboro Street is the bustling shopping and street-food spine. Try gudeg (sweet jackfruit stew, the Yogyakarta signature dish), bakpia (mung-bean pastries), and kopi joss (charcoal-infused coffee). Climb Mount Merapi (active volcano) at sunrise. Take a batik or silversmith workshop in nearby Kotagede. Day trip to the cooler hill town of Kaliurang.
When to avoid
Mount Merapi is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, check current activity before climbing or visiting nearby villages. Major eruptions occurred in 2010 and 2022. Earthquake risk is real (2006 quake killed 5,000+). Borobudur sunrise tours sell out months ahead in dry season, book early. Becak (pedicab) and taxi scams target tourists, use Gojek/Grab apps. Don't wear shoes inside mosques or temples. Cover knees and shoulders. Tap water is unsafe. Bottled is everywhere. Volcanic ash can disrupt flights.
