Why visit
Yulin has limited international tourism appeal and is mostly visited by domestic travelers passing through. Within the prefecture, the Du'e Karst landscape, the Buddhist Yunding Mountain pavilion, and the Beiliu volcanic Tianhu (Heaven Lake) crater lake are visual draws. The vast lychee groves of southern Guangxi peak in late June, the city is one of China's largest lychee producers and the fruit truly is exceptional. Local Cantonese-Yue cuisine includes thin rice noodles in clear broth, oil-stick dim sum, and yu cha (oil-tea, a salty herbal tea infusion popular across Guangxi). Day trips to historic Wuzhou or the karst country around Guilin are possible.
When to avoid
The Yulin Dog Meat Festival (around June 21 to 22) is really disturbing for many visitors, dogs are slaughtered in markets, and the period sees animal-welfare protest and counter-protest. If you wouldn't want to witness this, avoid the city around the summer solstice. English is virtually nonexistent. Mainland China visa needed. The 144-hour transit-visa-free policy doesn't apply to Yulin. Summer humidity and heat are severe. Typhoon-season storms occasionally reach inland from the coast. WeChat/Alipay essential.
