Why visit
Currently a difficult and risky destination, see warnings below. In safer times, Zamboanga's draws were the pink-sand Great Santa Cruz Island (one of only a handful of pink beaches in the world. Naturally tinted by red coral fragments). Fort Pilar Shrine. The National Museum branch. The colorful vinta sailboats with rainbow-striped sails in Rio Hondo, and Yakan weaving villages. The Hermosa Festival in October celebrates the city's patron Our Lady of Pilar with the Regatta de Zamboanga vinta race. Try chavacano dishes, satti (Tausug-style satay over rice), curacha crab, and knickerbocker dessert.
When to avoid
Western governments (US, UK, Canada, Australia) advise against all travel to the Sulu Archipelago and most of western Mindanao due to terrorism and kidnap-for-ransom threats from the Abu Sayyaf Group and other insurgencies. Zamboanga City itself sees periodic incidents but is more secure than the surrounding islands. Check current advisories carefully, the situation has improved post-2017 but remains complex. Travel insurance is often invalidated. Don't travel to Basilan, Sulu, or Tawi-Tawi without specialized security planning. Photograph mosques and Muslim communities only with permission.
