    Benidorm is a wall of high-rises behind two long sandy beaches. I won't oversell it: come for the beach, the sun, and the cheap nights out.

    Benidorm is a wall of high-rises behind two long beaches on the Costa Blanca. I do not come for old Spain. I come for the beach, sun, cheap nights out, and a resort that stays busy well outside summer.

    Two beaches

    Levante and Poniente are the two big beaches, split by the headland that holds the small Old Town and the Balcon del Mediterraneo viewpoint.

    Direct airport bus

    ALSA runs directly between Alicante-Elche Airport and Benidorm. This is the simplest public-transport option from the airport.

    TRAM from Alicante

    Line 1 runs along the coast from Alicante to Benidorm. From the airport, take the direct bus or connect through Alicante first.

    Know what it is

    Benidorm is high-rise, busy, and built for package holidays. Come for the beach and the resort scene, not a quiet old Spanish town.

    How do I get to Benidorm?

    Alicante-Elche Airport is the nearest airport. ALSA runs a direct bus to Benidorm. From Alicante city, TRAM Line 1 runs north along the coast to Benidorm. If you want to take the TRAM from the airport, the C6 airport bus gets you into Alicante for the connection.

    A car is not needed for a Benidorm beach trip, since the resort is walkable and the TRAM covers the coast. A car helps only if you plan day trips up into the hills, such as the mountain village of Guadalest.

    Where should I stay?

    Benidorm's accommodation is concentrated in the high-rise blocks behind the two beaches. The area behind Levante Beach is the livelier base, closer to the nightlife and entertainment. The area behind Poniente Beach is calmer and more family-oriented.

    The Old Town, on the headland between the two, has smaller hotels and older streets. It is the part I would choose if I wanted the beach without sleeping in the middle of the main nightlife area.

    Benidorm runs on its two beaches. Levante Beach is the busier strip, backed by bars and the entertainment area. Poniente Beach, on the other side of the headland, is longer and calmer.

    Between them sits the small Old Town, the Casco Antiguo, where narrow streets and tapas bars replace the high-rise blocks. At its tip, the Balcón del Mediterráneo is the blue-and-white tiled viewpoint over both beaches.

    Where to eat

    Benidorm eats on a wide resort range: Spanish tapas and seafood alongside a heavy presence of British and international food built for the package-holiday crowd. The Old Town has the more traditional Spanish kitchens.
