A personal Hilton Head travel guide. Getting in from Savannah, the south coast US food rotation, and the Low Country beach base.
Hilton Head is the South Carolina barrier-island resort town that runs at a calmer pace than the Florida coast or the Outer Banks. The wide flat Atlantic beach is the daily anchor, the pine-forest interior of the island is the second side, and the food and golf carry the rest of the trip. Many travelers route through Savannah (an hour away by car) for a half-day or a dinner. The Hilton Head guide pairs cleanly with a Savannah extension. Three to five days for a beach trip. Longer for a relaxed week.

Getting in from the airport
Hilton Head Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV) is served by a small regional airport (HHH) and by Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV) about 60 km away. SAV handles the bulk of inbound flights and is the practical gateway.

Festivals and big annual events
Hilton Head's calendar runs on the PGA Tour week in April, the wine festival in spring, and the standard US national holidays. The April golf week is the biggest hotel-pressure window of the year.

The trip-shaping window is the RBC Heritage golf tournament in mid-April. If golf is the trip, book by January. If golf is not the trip, do not visit that week unless you enjoy paying triple. The Gullah Geechee heritage events are the underrated cultural depth most international visitors miss.
Where to eat
