Venlo is a small, easygoing Dutch town in Limburg, right on the German border, with a Renaissance town hall, a walkable old center, and direct rail connections on both sides of the border.

    Planning brief

    Planning Venlo

Venlo is a town of about 100,000 in the southeastern Dutch province of Limburg, on the River Maas and right against the German border. It is a compact, easygoing town with a Renaissance town hall, a walkable old center, and a strong local food-and-cafe scene. The town hall, historic streets, and market square sit in a compact center.

    Compact border town

Venlo's town hall, old streets, market square, and cafes all cluster in a compact center that is easy to explore on foot.

    A border town

Venlo sits directly on the German border, and the two countries blend here. It is a common shopping and day-trip stop from the German side.

    Easy by train

Venlo is on the rail line between the Randstad and Germany, with direct trains to both. Treat it as a stop rather than a base.

Like the rest of the Dutch south, Venlo takes carnival seriously. If you visit in the pre-Lent season, the town's calendar runs on it.

How do I get to Venlo?

Venlo sits on the rail line between the Dutch Randstad and Germany. Direct trains connect it with Eindhoven and the western Netherlands, and with Düsseldorf and the German network across the border. Venlo station is a short walk from the old center.

The nearest airports are Eindhoven and Düsseldorf. Once in town, the center is small and walkable.

    Where should I stay?

The old center around the market square is the natural base, walkable to the central sights and the station. Hotels there also simplify late train connections across the German border.

The atlas does not yet carry hotel pins for Venlo, so book on the usual sites and read recent reviews for the property.

    What to see in Venlo

The landmark is the town hall, the Stadhuis, a Renaissance building of the late 16th century standing on the market square, the finest single sight in town. Around it, the old center is a walkable grid of historic streets, shops, and cafes, partly rebuilt after heavy damage in the Second World War.

St. Martin's Church is the tall Gothic church anchoring the skyline. The River Maas runs along the edge of the center, with a riverside walk. Venlo is not a town of major museums, and the pleasure of it is a slow wander and a long lunch.

    Where to eat

Venlo eats on Limburg cooking, a softer, more southern Dutch style with its own pastries and a strong cafe tradition, plus the easy cross-border German influence.

    Brouwersplaats A restaurant
    Café De Baek A cafe
Café De Klep A traditional cafe
Het Romerhuis Coffee, tea, and chocolate
