Direct services run to London Paddington (under two hours), Bath Spa (about 12 minutes, every 15 minutes), Cardiff Central, and onward to the West Country and the Midlands. Originally opened in 1840 as the terminus of Brunel's Great Western Railway; the original 1840 train shed survives next to the modern concourse.

It is an important transport hub for public transport in the city; there are bus services to many parts of the city and surrounding districts, with a ferry to the city centre.
