Estación Barón

Barón was the first station built for the railway from Valparaíso toward Santiago. Work on the line began in 1852 under engineer Henry Meiggs, and the complete Valparaíso-Santiago route opened in 1863. The railway turned Barón into both a transport point and an industrial district at the edge of the port.

EFE added a major workshop here in 1904. Its crews repaired locomotives and built railcars, some for export. The workshops closed in the 1990s, but the surviving sheds and turntable became National Historic Monuments in 1986. Today's Tren Limache-Puerto station is an active modern stop beside that larger historic site, and a small site museum below platform 1 preserves a section of the old seawall uncovered during construction.
