Estación Central General Artigas
Montevideo
About
Estación Central General Artigas was Montevideo's main railway terminal from 1897 until its closure in 2003. Engineer Luis Andreoni designed an eclectic building that pulls together Renaissance, Baroque, Mannerist, and Second Empire references. Its scale reflects a period when nearly every major Uruguayan rail journey began or ended here.
The station has been a National Historic Monument since 1975. The state recovered the property in 2026 and began cleaning, securing, and evaluating it for future use. It is not currently a normal passenger station, so visit for the exterior and the urban history rather than expecting to board a train. Plans may change as the recovery work advances.
