Estación Mapocho

Estación Mapocho is a former railway terminal that now works as a cultural center. Construction began in 1905 under Chilean architect Emilio Jéquier, who trained in France. From here, trains once ran north toward Iquique and east toward the Transandine connection for Mendoza and Buenos Aires.

The station became a National Monument in 1976 and closed to trains in 1987. A public competition selected the restrained conversion by Montserrat Palmer, Teodoro Fernández, Ramón López, and Rodrigo Pérez de Arce. The restored center opened in 1994. The building is the attraction now, while exhibitions, fairs, and performances determine what is happening inside on a particular day.
