About

Paso del Cerro station opened in 1892 on the line between Tacuarembó and Rivera. The settlement grew as a loading point for material from nearby mines, so the railway is central to the place rather than a later addition.

The line approaches the Bañado de Rocha railway tunnel, Uruguay's only traditional railway tunnel and a National Historic Monument. The protected listing belongs to the tunnel, not the station building, but the station makes sense as part of the same 1892 corridor. Current passenger trains are limited, and some rural stops on this route operate only by request.
