best for heritage railways, unusual transport days, scale steam trainswith brother

My brother and I did this without a car, which made the transport almost as memorable as the railway. The ride itself is the reason to go: 15-inch-gauge steam and diesel trains crossing Romney Marsh, small enough to feel unreal but run like a proper railway. Tickets are not cheap, but there are not many places where you can spend an afternoon on working scale steam engines. Plan the exit before you board, especially if you ride toward Dungeness. Taxis can be thin and buses do not run late.

Heritage 15-inch-gauge railway across Romney Marsh, opened in 1927 and now running miniature steam and diesel trains between Hythe, New Romney, Dymchurch and Dungeness. During World War II the line was taken over for military use, including an armoured train and work connected to PLUTO pipeline construction.
