About
Rivera station opened with the completion of the northern railway in 1892. It later became part of the cross-border rail connection with Santana do Livramento in Brazil, where different track gauges required a third rail on the international section.
The station is a National Historic Monument and the northern end of AFE's limited passenger service from Tacuarembó. The building is historically important even when cross-border passenger trains are not operating. For current travel, treat Rivera and Livramento as a shared border city but verify each transport service separately.
