About
This group of petroglyphs in the Alta Fjord, near the Arctic Circle, bears the traces of a settlement dating from c. 4200 to 500 B.C. The thousands of paintings and engravings add to our understanding of the environment and human activities on the fringes of the Far North in prehistoric times.

Alta Museum follows a full 2026 seasonal timetable: Jan 2-May 17 weekdays 09:00-15:00 and weekends 11:00-16:00; May 18-31 daily 09:00-17:00; Jun 1-Aug 21 daily 09:00-19:00; Aug 22-Sep 18 daily 09:00-17:00; Sep 19-Dec 31 weekdays 09:00-15:00 and weekends 11:00-16:00. Outdoor rock art is best in the snow-free season.
