Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus

The Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus developed around a healing cult that was established by the sixth century BCE. Patients came to worship Asklepios, undergo ritual purification, sleep in the abaton, and seek cures interpreted through dreams. The fourth-century complex included the Temple of Asklepios, the circular Tholos, baths, athletic buildings, lodging, and a theatre.

The theatre sits above the sanctuary and preserves a stone auditorium shaped for performances as well as festival gatherings. Its current form belongs mainly to the fourth and third centuries BCE. The grounds form a large medical and religious complex, so visiting involves walking between monuments across exposed terrain.
