Shreveport Water Works Museum

The museum occupies the 1887 McNeill Street Pumping Station just west of downtown Shreveport. The main pump room still holds its steam engines, pumps, filters and pipes in the positions where they operated, so the machinery is part of the building rather than a collection moved into a gallery.

The plant began filtering water in 1890 and adopted liquid-chlorine disinfection in 1914. When the steam engines retired in 1980, this was the last known steam-powered municipal water treatment plant operating in the United States. The site is both a National Historic Landmark and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

Admission is free, with donations supporting preservation. The railroad museum is on the same grounds.
