St Nicholas Church, Old Town
Prague, Czechia
About
St Nicholas Church presents a white Baroque facade and copper dome to Old Town Square. A church was documented on this site by 1273, but the present building was completed in 1735 to designs by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. It originally stood inside a tighter block of surrounding buildings, which explains why its facade was composed for a much closer view than the open square provides today.
The interior uses a compact cross-shaped plan, layered stucco and controlled daylight. The Czechoslovak Hussite Church has administered the building since 1920, and it remains active for services and concerts. Regular visiting hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., except during church events.
