Quick facts
- Network
- Amtrak runs intercity passenger trains across 46 states, the District of Columbia, and parts of Canada.
- The atlas separates genuine route branches instead of drawing false links between their terminals.
- Route data
- Station order and coordinates come from Amtrak's official GTFS schedule feed, version 20260804.
- Individual departures may skip stations or terminate before the end of a corridor.
- Tickets
- Fares vary by train, date, and accommodation. Search the exact stations and departure before comparing the price.
- A corridor can carry several named trains with different stopping patterns and ticket rules.
- Rail passes
- The USA Rail Pass covers 10 segments within 30 days. It still requires a RideReserve confirmation for each intended trip.
- Multi-ride products have route and train restrictions, and they are not a substitute for checking availability.
- Accessibility
- Accessibility differs by station, platform, and train. Add a specific assistance request while making the reservation.
- Track ownership
- Amtrak owns much of the Northeast Corridor. Most long-distance trains operate largely over tracks owned by freight railroads.
- The host railroad can affect dispatching and on-time performance outside Amtrak-owned territory.
- Network type
- National intercity passenger rail, including Northeast Corridor, state-supported, and long-distance services.

Mike’s notes
Amtrak is the national intercity passenger operator in the United States. The network combines three rather different kinds of train: frequent Northeast Corridor service, shorter routes supported by individual states, and long-distance trains that cross several states on one schedule.
The route name matters. Acela and Northeast Regional share much of the railway between Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, but they do not make the same stops. Elsewhere, a state corridor and a long-distance train may cover the same pair of cities at different times with different fares and onboard service.
Read the branches literally
Several Amtrak names cover more than one endpoint. The Empire Builder divides at Spokane for Seattle and Portland. The Lake Shore Limited has New York and Boston sections east of Albany. Northeast Regional trains continue beyond the main Boston to Washington corridor on different branches toward Springfield, Roanoke, Norfolk, and Newport News.
Those branches appear as separate line diagrams here. This keeps the station order readable and avoids inventing a direct railway between two branch terminals. It does not mean Amtrak sells each branch under a separate brand.
The Floridian creates a different mapping problem. It serves Tampa by leaving the main Florida route at Lakeland and returning over the same track. The atlas divides that movement into Chicago to Tampa and Tampa to Miami diagrams so Lakeland does not appear twice on one linear schematic.
Buy for the actual departure
Search the origin, destination, and date on Amtrak rather than treating the line map as a timetable. Fares can change by departure and accommodation. Long-distance trains may have coach seats, roomettes, and bedrooms, while a shorter corridor train may only offer coach and business class.
The USA Rail Pass covers 10 travel segments within 30 days. A segment is one train, not one continuous direction across the country, and each intended trip still needs a RideReserve confirmation. Multi-ride products have additional route restrictions.
Allow room for the operating conditions
Amtrak owns much of the Northeast Corridor, but most long-distance mileage runs over railways owned by freight companies. A long-distance arrival can move substantially from its printed time. Avoid building a tight self-transfer onto a separate ticket, flight, or event.
Station facilities also vary. A major terminal may have checked baggage, staffed ticket counters, lounges, and level boarding. A rural stop may be an unstaffed platform. Check the page for both endpoint stations, especially when checked baggage or boarding assistance is part of the trip.
Arrange accessibility by station and train
Amtrak publishes accessibility details for individual stations. Add the specific assistance request during booking when a wheelchair, boarding help, or station escort is required. The same route can combine a major accessible terminal with smaller platforms that use different boarding equipment.
