Antwerp is a rail-arrival city first. You come into Antwerpen-Centraal, look up, and the station itself is part of the trip. The tram and premetro layer is what you use after that if the walk is too long or your hotel sits outside the old core.
Do not think of it as a clean metro like Brussels. Antwerp's premetro is trams using underground tunnels through the city center, then running on the surface again. That makes it useful, but a little less obvious to read if you are expecting a simple subway map.
How I would use it
For a short Antwerp stay, I would mostly walk. The old city, cathedral, riverfront, station quarter, and food stops are compact enough that you do not need to make transit the main plan.
Use the premetro when you are moving between the station side and outlying hotel or park-and-ride corridors, or when weather makes walking annoying. Diamant, Astrid, Opera, Plantin, and the Central Station area are the names to recognize.
Payment
De Lijn's contactless setup is visitor-friendly. Tap your bank card, phone, or wearable at the white terminal. You do not need to tap out. If you transfer within 60 minutes, use the same payment method and the transfer is included.
