M2 connects Anthoupoli and Peristeri in western Athens with Omonia, Syntagma, Akropoli, Neos Kosmos, and Elliniko in the south. It is the direct red line for the Acropolis Museum side of the center, although the archaeological site also involves walking uphill.
The first section opened in 2000 between Sepolia and Syntagma. Extensions later carried the line south to Elliniko and northwest to Anthoupoli, with both present termini reached in 2013.
A normal ride costs €1.20. A supported Visa or Mastercard bank card can be tapped directly at the gates, as can Apple Pay or Google Pay, and the same card or device must be used to exit. Ath.ena Tickets and the €4.10 day fare remain available.
M2 uses modern six-car trains, but the earliest generation lacks air-conditioning and remains in service while a refurbishment program is prepared. Later trains have climate control. Central sections become crowded around Syntagma, Omonia, Panepistimio, and Akropoli.
All M2 stations were built with elevators and step-free routes between street and platform. Working lift status still matters, so check STASY before travel when wheelchair access depends on a specific entrance. Pickpocket risk is highest in crowded central cars and at busy interchange platforms.
