M1 is the Budapest metro line to ride even if you do not need it. It is the 1896 Millennium Underground, a shallow cut-and-cover line under Andrássy út, and it feels like a working museum that still happens to be useful.

The line starts near the center at Vörösmarty tér, passes Deák Ferenc tér, then runs under the boulevard through Opera, Oktogon, and toward Hősök tere. For the yellow-bath day, stay on for Széchenyi fürdő and walk into City Park or Széchenyi Thermal Bath.

The trains and stations are small because the line is small. Do not expect the comfort or capacity of M2, M3, or M4. The point is the old geometry: low platforms, short cars, shallow stations, and a route that explains why the metro was built to protect the boulevard above it. If you care about cities and buildings, this is one of Budapest's best transit rides.
