Luxembourg's rail network is small and extends well beyond the commuter routes around the capital. Trains run north through Ettelbruck to Troisvierges and Gouvy, east through Wasserbillig to Trier, west toward Kleinbettingen and Arlon, and south through Bettembourg and Esch-sur-Alzette. Branches reach Wiltz, Diekirch, Rumelange, Volmerange-les-Mines, and Audun-le-Tiche.

Luxembourg Central is the main transfer point. Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg connects the railway with the funicular and tram, while Bettembourg, Esch-sur-Alzette, Rodange, Ettelbruck, and Kautenbach organize the outer branches. The diagrams use current stopping patterns from Luxembourg's official GTFS feed, so some regional and express trains appear separately even when they share most of the same track.

Tickets

Second-class trains are free within Luxembourg. There is no domestic ticket to buy or validate. First class still requires a ticket, and the free area ends at the border. A trip to Trier, Arlon, Gouvy, Athus, Longwy, Volmerange-les-Mines, Audun-le-Tiche, Thionville, or another foreign station needs the international or cross-border ticket sold for that journey.

The free domestic rule also applies when a train is operated with foreign equipment. The free section is determined by the part of the trip inside Luxembourg, not the logo on the train.

Planning the trip

CFL publishes line timetables for the full December 2025 to December 2026 timetable year. The CFL go app and journey planner add live platforms, transfers, and disruption notices. Summer engineering work can close an entire corridor and replace it with buses, so the live result matters more than an old screenshot of the timetable.

Regional trains make frequent stops and equipment varies by corridor. Cross-border RE, RB, IC, TER, and TGV services have different seating and reservation rules after leaving Luxembourg. Buy the complete international itinerary when the journey crosses the border.

Bicycles and accessibility

Bicycles travel free on domestic trains without a reservation, subject to available space. Wheelchairs and pushchairs have priority in the shared areas. International bicycle rules differ and may require a separate ticket or reservation.

CFL is still replacing older trains and rebuilding stations for level access. Domestic assistance can be requested at least one hour before departure, while international assistance needs 24 hours. Luxembourg Central has the broadest on-site support. Smaller stops may be unstaffed, so check the specific station and assigned train before traveling.
