Denmark's main railway runs from Copenhagen across Zealand, Funen, and Jutland. DSB operates the principal InterCity, InterCityLyn, regional, and Copenhagen S-train services. GoCollective, Lokaltog, Nordjyske Jernbaner, Midttrafik, and cross-border operators fill in regional and local routes.
The core long-distance trip is Copenhagen to Odense, Fredericia, Aarhus, and Aalborg. Trains cross the Great Belt between Zealand and Funen instead of using a ferry. Other lines branch toward Esbjerg, Sønderborg, Struer, Frederikshavn, and the smaller coastal railways. Øresund trains continue from Copenhagen Airport into southern Sweden.
The diagrams show active stopping patterns rather than one simplified national map. A train may run as InterCity on the main corridor and continue beyond Copenhagen or Aarhus under the same trip. Rejseplanen gives the current destination, platform, transfers, and operator.
Tickets and check-in
Have a valid ticket or check in before boarding. The DSB app sells regular tickets and also supports phone-based check-in across Danish public transport, except on Bornholm. Rejsekort uses the blue readers at stations. Check in again when transferring, then check out at the end of the journey.
DSB Orange tickets are tied to a particular departure and can be cheaper when bought ahead. A normal ticket and a seat reservation are separate products. Reservations are available on InterCity, InterCityLyn, and some regional trains. They are useful on busy intercity departures, but they are not normally required for a domestic trip.
International trains can have different ticket and reservation rules. Buy the itinerary shown by DSB or the international operator rather than assuming a domestic check-in covers the full journey into Germany or Sweden.
On the train
InterCity and InterCityLyn trains carry first and second class, quiet areas, toilets, and space for luggage. Regional equipment varies by operator and route. Local railways often use smaller diesel or electric units with frequent stops.
Bicycles, baby carriages, and wheelchairs use designated spaces. Some intercity trips require a separate space reservation even when the passenger already has a valid ticket. DSB requires wheelchair reservations on InterCity, InterCityLyn, Lyn+, and Interregional trains, booked at least two days ahead. Check the operator when a trip uses a regional railway because its assistance procedure may be different.
