Hellenic Train Passenger Rail Katakolo–Olympia Railway

The line connects Katakolo port with Pyrgos and Olympia, placing the final station within walking distance of the archaeological museum and ancient site. Through trains run Monday to Saturday, with some additional services covering only part of the route.

The Katakolo to Pyrgos railway opened in 1882, and the branch from Pyrgos to Olympia followed in the 1890s. It survives as one of the few operating passenger routes on the old Peloponnese meter-gauge network.

The published round-trip fare is €10. Buy through Hellenic Train channels or at an available sales point. This is not a contactless bank-card tap-in route, so do not rely on presenting a bank card as proof of fare during inspection.

Small diesel railcar rolling stock covers the journey in about 50 minutes. Seating and climate control are simpler than on modern suburban trains, and cruise-ship arrivals can create short periods of crowding.

Portable ramps can support wheelchair boarding, but assistance and platform access vary by station. Contact Hellenic Train at least 24 hours ahead when mobility support is required. Check the day’s timetable because not every Pyrgos train continues through to both Katakolo and Olympia.
