Hellenic Train Passenger Rail Pelion Train

The Pelion Train connects Ano Lechonia with Ano Gatzea and Milies on a 15-kilometer narrow-gauge mountain railway. It is a tourist service rather than part of the everyday Volos transport network, and the scheduled journey takes about 90 minutes each way.

The railway opened in stages between 1895 and 1903 under engineer Evaristo de Chirico. Regular service ended in the 1970s, and the mountain section later reopened as a heritage train.

Buy a dated Hellenic Train ticket for trains 3800 and 3801. There is no contactless bank-card tap-in, and the limited weekend departures can sell out during holidays. The train normally runs Saturday and Sunday, with selected extra dates announced separately.

Heritage rolling stock uses a small diesel locomotive and open or lightly enclosed coaches without modern climate control. The slow ride, wooden seating, and 15-minute stop at Ano Gatzea are part of the operation rather than a fast regional journey.

The old narrow-gauge platforms, steps, and vehicle entrances are not reliably wheelchair accessible. Hellenic Train does not offer the same unscheduled mobility assistance provided on suburban routes. Confirm boarding needs before buying and expect exposed edges and uneven ground at the mountain stops.
