The Esquel to Nahuel Pan train is La Trochita's main Chubut excursion. The 19 km outward route has 49 curves and the complete round trip takes about three hours, including time at Nahuel Pan.
The line opened to Esquel with an inaugural train on May 25, 1945, and regular passenger service began in 1950. Today's trip uses part of that original 750 mm route rather than continuing north across Patagonia. The complete Jacobacci to Esquel railway became a National Historic Monument in 1999.
Buy a dated ticket through La Trochita's official sales site. The operator asks passengers to reach Esquel station an hour before departure for check-in. That time also covers the small railway exhibit in the original station.
The preserved rolling stock pairs steam locomotives with early twentieth-century coaches and basic seating. At Nahuel Pan, passengers can visit the Tehuelche-Mapuche cultural museum, artisans' house, and craft stalls before the return journey.
A coach with a wheelchair ramp is available, but it needs to be arranged with staff at Esquel station. The railway exhibit can also be visited with assistance.
