History

This line uses track that opened in stages as the network grew.

Munich opened its S-Bahn in 1972 for the Summer Olympics. Most lines share the central tunnel between Hauptbahnhof and Ostbahnhof, so disruption there can affect much of the network.

Tickets and trains

Use the local transport association’s ticket or app. The Deutschland-Ticket covers participating S-Bahn and Regio-S-Bahn service, but not ICE, IC, or EC trains. Check the dated journey in the operator planner when engineering work changes the route.

Electric multiple-unit trains handle most departures, although the assigned fleet and train length vary by operator and route. Seating and crowding change with train length and time of day.
