Rome Metro C

Line C is the newest and longest metro line, running from Colosseo/Fori Imperiali out to Pantano in the eastern suburbs. It opened in stages from 2014 and reached the center in 2025, where Colosseo/Fori Imperiali meets Line B and San Giovanni connects to Line A. Those two stops are the ones a visitor uses.

The line took decades for a Roman reason: every dig toward the center hits ruins. San Giovanni surfaced finds from the excavation and now shows them in the station, along the walls of the escalator descent, arranged by the depth they came from. Building a metro under a city that is itself an archaeological site is the whole engineering problem, and Line C is where you can watch Rome work it out.
