Mike’s notes

SNCB and NMBS are the French and Dutch names for the same Belgian national railway. The network is compact, frequent around the major cities, and useful for trips that would be more complicated by car.

The Brussels stations are not interchangeable

Many trains cross Brussels through Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel-Zuid, Bruxelles-Central/Brussel-Centraal, and Bruxelles-Nord/Brussel-Noord. They are separate stations on the same central corridor. Midi/Zuid is the principal terminal for Eurostar and other international trains, while Central is usually the most convenient stop for the historic center.

The bilingual names can look like different destinations in an itinerary. Check both versions before assuming a connection requires travel across town.

Domestic tickets are straightforward

Domestic SNCB trains normally use open seating without reservations. Buy a valid fare before boarding through the app or website, a station machine, or an open ticket office. A purchase confirmation is not valid for travel, and an app screenshot does not include the dynamic elements checked on board.

International services follow their own rules. Eurostar, TGV INOUI, ICE, Nightjet, and some cross-border trains may require a specific departure and a reserved seat. Use the operator shown on the itinerary when checking changes, luggage rules, or missed connections.

Assistance depends on the station

SNCB offers free assistance for passengers with reduced mobility. Some direct journeys between major staffed stations can be arranged closer to departure, while other trips require advance notice. Confirm the request before traveling and allow enough time at the station for the agreed meeting point and any connection.
