Mike’s notes

Southern Peru Tourist Rail: PeruRail Titicaca is a full-day reserved-seat train between Wánchaq and Puno. The Andean Explorer is a luxury hotel train sold as one-night and two-night itineraries between Cusco, Puno, and Arequipa. Neither works like ordinary intercity transport.

The Southern Railway opened to Puno in the nineteenth century, and the extension through to Cusco opened in 1908. The modern tourist services reuse that high-altitude route across La Raya and the altiplano. PeruRail introduced the current overnight Andean Explorer in 2017.

Riding the network

Reserve a dated itinerary directly with PeruRail. The Titicaca fare includes assigned seating, lunch, and onboard entertainment. Andean Explorer prices include a cabin, meals, and the excursions listed for that itinerary. Ordinary rail passes and contactless bank-card payment do not apply.

Current vehicles and ride: The Titicaca train uses dining, bar, and observation coaches for a roughly ten-and-a-half-hour daytime trip. Andean Explorer has sleeping cabins, lounges, dining cars, and an open observation deck. The long stops and overnight timing are part of the product.

Cusco departures use Wánchaq station, not San Pedro. Puno arrivals use the railway property near the lake, with some Andean Explorer itineraries staying overnight at Puno Muelle. Arequipa trains use the historic station on Avenida Tacna y Arica.

Accessibility: These are older locomotive-hauled trains with steps into the coaches and narrow interior passages. Contact PeruRail before booking for mobility assistance and cabin details.

Service runs on selected days and pauses for part of the wet season. Published arrival times include itinerary stops and can change for railway operations. Treat the schedule as a reservation, not a turn-up-and-go timetable.
