Taoyuan Airport MRT is the rail link between TPE and Taipei. Treat it as airport rail, not as another Taipei Metro line.
From the airport terminal, take the express train to Taipei Main Station, then transfer to Taipei Metro, TRA, THSR, or a taxi depending on where you are sleeping. Taipei Main is large and layered, so give yourself a few extra minutes the first time through.
How to pay
You can buy a single ticket, use an EasyCard, or use supported card/mobile payment products. If the trip is Taipei plus day trips, EasyCard is still the easiest habit because it follows you onto metro, bus, convenience-store spending, and a lot of local rail use.
The airport ride is clean and obvious. The only hard part is Taipei Main Station once you arrive.
