Thessaloniki Metro 1

Line 1 connects Thessaloniki New Railway Station with Dimokratias, Venizelou, Agias Sofias, the university district, and Nea Elvetia. It is a single east-west spine under the city, with no operating branch to Kalamaria yet.

Construction began in 2006 after decades of earlier proposals, and the 13-station line opened in 2024. It temporarily closed for integration tests in 2026, then reopened along its full original length while work on the Kalamaria extension continued.

The urban fare is €0.60. Buy or recharge a ThessTicket at the station machine, then validate it at both entry and exit gates. A contactless bank card can pay for the purchase at the machine, but it does not replace a metro ticket at the gate.

Driverless four-car trains provide climate control, open gangways, information screens, and frequent service. Full-height platform screen doors separate every platform from the tracks, and the ride is quieter and more controlled than the city’s surface buses.

Every station has elevators, tactile guidance, wide gates, level boarding, and wheelchair spaces in the first and last cars. Check the operator’s live elevator status before travel when step-free access is essential. Station staff and emergency intercoms are available throughout operating hours.
