Annecy is a French Alpine town at the north end of a clean, swimmable lake. The old town is threaded with canals, the mountains rise straight from the water, and the old town and lakefront connect easily on foot.

    Planning brief

    Planning Annecy

Annecy is a town of about 130,000 in the French Alps, at the northern tip of one of the cleanest lakes in Europe. The old town is threaded by canals and overlooked by a castle, the lake is swimmable, and the mountains rise straight from the water. The central sights form a compact route, with wider regional connections beyond it.

    Old town and lake

The old town and lakefront sit close together. Longer walks, cycling routes, swimming areas, and boat trips continue around the lake.

The old town is small and walkable

The canal-laced old quarter is the heart of the visit. The Palais de l'Ile sits mid-canal, and the castle looks down from the hill above.

The lake is the other half

Lake Annecy is clean enough to swim in, ringed by a flat cycle path. Rent a bike or a pedalo, or just walk the lakeside gardens.

Time it for a market day

The old-town market runs several mornings a week and is one of the best in the region. Build the trip around a Tuesday, Friday, or Sunday if you can.

How do I get to Annecy?

The closest airport is Geneva, about 45 minutes away by road or direct bus, with Lyon about an hour and a half. By rail, TGV trains from Paris reach Annecy in roughly four hours.

Annecy station is a short walk from both the old town and the lake, so you do not need a car once you arrive. The town itself is small and best seen on foot.

The old town and the lake

The old town, the Vieille Ville, is the heart of Annecy: a tight grid of pastel arcaded houses split by branches of the Thiou canal. The canal has earned the town the overused nickname "Venice of the Alps." Mid-canal, the Palais de l'Île is the sharp-prowed 12th-century building that has been a courthouse and a prison. It is now a small museum and the most photographed object in town.

Above the old town, Annecy Castle, the former home of the Counts of Geneva, looks down from its hill. At the lake end of the old town, the Pont des Amours crosses the canal toward the Jardins de l'Europe, the lakeside park of mature trees that opens onto the water.

Lake Annecy itself is the other half of the visit. A flat path circles much of the shore for walking and cycling, the water is swimmable through the warm months, and pedalos and small boats are easy to rent from the waterfront.

    The markets

Annecy runs one of the better markets in the region. The main old-town market fills the canal-side streets on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday mornings with produce, mountain cheeses, charcuterie, and Savoyard specialties. The Annecy farmers market is the place to taste your way through the local Alpine food. A separate market on the boulevard Taine adds another option. If a market matters to the trip, plan around one of those mornings.

    Where to eat

Annecy eats Savoyard: Alpine cheese in every form, from raclette and fondue to tartiflette, alongside lake fish and the produce off the market stalls.

    Quick answers

How do I get to Annecy?
The closest airport is Geneva, about 45 minutes away by road or bus, with Lyon about an hour and a half. By rail, TGV trains from Paris reach Annecy in roughly four hours. Annecy station is a short walk from the old town and the lake, so you do not need a car once you arrive.
Can you swim in Lake Annecy?
Yes. Lake Annecy is one of the cleanest lakes in Europe, and swimming is a normal part of a summer visit. There are free public beaches and paid beach areas around the shore, and the water is warm enough to swim from roughly June into September. A flat cycle and walking path runs much of the way around the lake.
When is the market in Annecy?
The main old-town market runs on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday mornings, filling the canal-side streets of the old quarter with produce, cheese, and Savoyard specialties. A separate market is held at the boulevard Taine. If a market is part of the appeal, plan the trip around one of those mornings.
