Why visit
Iraq has slowly opened to tourism since 2021, Baghdad rewards travelers wanting Mesopotamian history (the National Museum's restored Sumerian-Akkadian-Babylonian collections), Mutanabbi Street book bazaar on Fridays, and the gold-domed Al-Kādhimīyya Mosque. Visit October through April when the heat eases. Most travel as part of organized Iraq tours.
When to avoid
Critical: check current advisories carefully, Iraq remains a sensitive security environment with periodic political volatility, and many Western governments still advise against non-essential travel. Photography of government buildings is restricted. Mid-summer brings 45°C+ heat that's dangerous outdoors. A day in Baghdad depends on hours and movement as much as on the list of places. A practical day in Baghdad keeps nearby stops together and assumes that smaller sites may not keep generous hours.
