England, Europe
Bath sits in easy reach of the prehistoric, the medieval, and the chocolate-box Cotswolds. Stonehenge is the main add-on, but the wider West Country is a string of villages and one cathedral city all inside about an hour.
| Where | Getting there | Why go |
|---|---|---|
| Stonehenge | About 1 hr by GWR train to Salisbury, then the Stonehenge Tour bus | The prehistoric stone circle on Salisbury Plain. The guide covers both the English Heritage visit and the free public-byway walk from Larkhill. |
| Salisbury | About 1 hr by GWR train from Bath Spa | A medieval cathedral city with the tallest church spire in Britain and one of the four surviving original copies of Magna Carta. |
| Bristol | 12 to 15 min by train from Bath Spa | The bigger neighbor. Harbourside, the Banksy trail, Clifton and the suspension bridge, and a stronger food and bar scene. |
| Lacock | About 45 min by bus | A National Trust village kept so unspoiled it doubles as a film set for period dramas and Harry Potter. The abbey and the medieval streets are the draw. |
| Castle Combe | About 40 min by car, awkward by public transport | A Cotswold village often called the prettiest in England, with honey-stone cottages and a market cross. Easiest paired with a hired car or a tour. |
